Magnus Carlsen's best move may have been marrying his wife, Ella Victoria Carlsen.
The renowned Norwegian chess grandmaster married Ella in January 2025. Before meeting Magnus, Ella's interest in chess was piqued after watching the popular Netflix series The Queen's Gambit, leading her to play casual games online.
When she met Magnus, Ella admitted on Sjakksnakk in January 2025, "I expected some really cool woman to be the world's best, and it was Magnus!”
“He was really sweet when we first met,” she revealed on the podcast. “He was very shy and nervous. It was very endearing. He is incredibly intelligent.”
Since then, Ella has been a supportive presence in her husband’s life, often accompanying him to tournaments and events. In September 2025, Magnus and Ella welcomed their first child together, a son.
So, who is Magnus Carlsen's wife? Here's everything to know about Ella Victoria Carlsen and her relationship with the chess grandmaster.
She was born in Hong Kong

Ella was born in 1998 to a Norwegian mother and an American father.
She was born in Hong Kong and spent much of her early childhood in Singapore and holds permanent residency there. Her international background continued into her education, as she pursued studies across multiple countries, including Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.
It’s safe to say Ella grew up with a bit of a travel bug, which increased after meeting Magnus. “Before I met him, I would travel probably every month, at least, now it’s up to 2 to 3 times a month,” she said in her interview with Sjakksnakk.

Magnus and Ella’s love story began in a surprisingly modern way — through Netflix. Ella has openly credited The Queen’s Gambit with sparking her interest in chess, saying she watched the hit series in 2020 and looked up whether it was based on a true story. That’s when she discovered the real-world champion was Magnus.
“I expected some really cool woman to be the world’s best, and it was Magnus,” she said on Sjakksnakk in 2025. “After the Queen's Gambit I got really into chess for six weeks. It only lasted six weeks because my friends had an intervention."
While Ella hasn’t publicly shared the full story of how they met, she revealed in a January 2025 interview with Chess.com that Magnus was “shy and nervous” during their first encounter, which she found charming.

The pair began dating quietly in 2023 before going public in early 2024, when Ella accompanied Magnus to the Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge in Germany. Ella then became a regular presence at his side during tournaments.

The couple tied the knot on Jan. 4, 2025, in a picturesque ceremony at Holmenkollen Chapel in Oslo, Norway.
The intimate event was attended by close family and friends, including notable figures from the chess community such as Magnus' longtime coach GM Peter Heine Nielsen and GM Jon Ludvig Hammer, according to Chess.com. Following the ceremony, the couple hosted a reception at Oslo's iconic Grand Hotel.
The wedding received some additional attention due to the presence of a Netflix film crew, capturing footage for a documentary on Magnus.

Ella stepped into a more active role in managing her husband’s professional commitments in January 2025. She planned to oversee his schedule, coordinate interviews and liaise with tournament organizers, acting as his secretary.
She expressed enthusiasm for this new role, telling Chess.com, "It works really well. I am not just sitting around bored at the hotel twiddling my fingers and watching his games. We have a lot to do, and I love it."

Months earlier, Ella said on Sjakksnakk that she knew her husband would be a great father. “He’s going to be so amazing, that’s one of the things I really love about him as a person. He’s really great with kids ... he’s a child at heart,” she said.

Ella loves to support her husband during his competitions and press.
In her January 2025 interview with Chess.com, she expressed admiration for Magnus' authenticity, stating, “He is a breath of fresh air. I don't think a lot of people know that. He’s just so authentic and unapologetically himself, and he inspires me, and I love that about him.”
Her presence at tournaments and events has become a constant. “I love the players, I love the outfits, I love the destinations,” she said on Sjakksnakk about their upcoming plans, which of course, included playing freestyle chess around the world.
