Before Dark Matter returns with another mind-bending chapter, it’s time to revisit the twists and impossible choices that made Season 1 a gripping sci-fi thriller. Based on Blake Crouch’s bestselling novel, the Apple TV+ series followed Jason Dessen (Jason 1), a physicist whose ordinary life took a terrifying turn when he was abducted and forced into a reality that was not his own.

Jason 1 was kidnapped by none other than a version of himself (Jason 2), who was a celebrated physicist in his reality. It was revealed that Jason 2 had created a device (known as the Box) capable of traveling to alternate realities. He was aided by his friend Ryan, whose dr*g was used to travel between parallel universes.

Dark Matter Season 1 revealed that Jason 2 envied Jason 1's life with his wife Daniela and son Charlie, which is why he dr*gged him and took his place. As Jason 2 took over Jason 1’s life, the latter set out to find his way back to his reality through the Box, accompanied by Jason 2’s girlfriend Amanda Lucas.

Here is the complete recap.

Much of Dark Matter Season 1 followed Jason 1 as he traveled to alternate universes using the Box, alongside Amanda and Jason 2's friends & colleagues, Blair and Ryan. The Box presented the group with an infinite number of alternate realities, each shaped by different choices and possibilities. But Jason 1 realized that finding his original reality was not easy. As Jason 1 tried to reach Daniela and Charlie in his original reality, he encountered multiple versions of Chicago, mostly post-apocalyptic and dangerous for humans, like frozen cities and plague-ravaged civilizations.

Jason 2 managed to replace Jason 1 and settled into his life in Dark Matter Season 1 but the task at hand was difficult. He soon realized that he could not fully replace Jason 1 without knowing his shared history and the little moments with his family. Jason 2 desperately latched onto this stolen life but his lies began to unravel as Daniela became suspicious and Charlie struggled to connect with his father. The mother-son duo was quick to realize that their real Jason had been replaced with an imposter.

As Dark Matter Season 1 reached its finale, Jason 1's quest became increasingly difficult, especially after Amanda decided to abandon their journey to stay in a utopian alternate world. Ryan and Blair also chose different realities, forcing Jason 1 to continue his journey alone.

Dark Matter Season 1 recap: Did Jason find his home?

Amanda tried to lure Jason 1 into choosing the Utopian alternate world and build a new life with her but he refused and continued his journey in Dark Matter Season 1. Episode 7 saw Jason 1 finally succeed in his mission after he tracked down his real universe. However, this is where the show dropped its biggest twist. Jason 1 reached his original reality but every choice made in the Box created another version of himself, who all ended up in his world to fight for a chance at a fulfilling life with Daniela and Charlie. Jason 1 was shocked to discover that he was not the only one who found his way back, as many alternate versions of himself ended up in his world and were determined to take his place.

The Dessen family home was plagued by multiple identical Jasons. But Jason 1 managed to convince Daniela that he was her real husband. Daniela and Charlie accepted Jason 1's account and the family fled to the holiday home of one of Charlie's friends, with two other Jasons following them.

Dessens believed they were safe in their hideout in the Dark Matter Season 1 finale, But other Jasons showed up and tried to take Jason 1's place. However, in a shocking twist, Jason 2 had a change of heart and helped the Dessens escape. Jason 2 left a box of ampoules and an audio recording in the car, apologizing to Jason 1 and his family for his actions, which eventually landed them in this mess.

Left with no choice, Charlie, Jason 1 and Daniela arrived at the Box's location in hopes of finding a better world that would free them from the other Jasons. The final moments of the Season 1 finale saw Charlie opening a door to another reality, suggesting that Jason 1 let his son pick their new home to evade other Jasons.

Ryan 1 and Amanda also crossed paths when the former was trying to recreate the chemical used in the ampoules. It was certainly strange that Ryan 1 knew about Amanda's existence when she did not belong to his reality, setting up yet another mystery for the upcoming season.

Dark Matter Season 1 concluded with a (sort of) happy ending for the Dessen family, who were finally reunited. But it remains to be seen where Jason 1 and his family will end up. The upcoming season will likely explore the fallout from Jason 2’s actions as he was left behind in Jason 1’s original reality alongside multiple alternate versions of himself.
