In a stunning development that has shaken Hollywood, Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of legendary director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents.

Despite the gravity of the charges, Nick Reiner was notably absent from his scheduled court appearance on Tuesday (December 16, 2025). His newly retained legal counsel, high-profile defense attorney Alan Jackson, addressed the gathered press outside the courthouse, explaining that the delay was procedural.

“He has not been medically cleared,” Jackson told reporters, confirming that his client would not be present. “It’s just a procedure. Every single inmate goes through a medical care check before they’ve been transported to court.” While Jackson did not elaborate on the specific medical issue preventing the transport, he indicated that they hoped Reiner would be cleared to appear before a judge by Wednesday.

The decision to hire Jackson signals a significant legal strategy for the defense. Jackson is a renowned litigator whose past clientele includes Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey. He most recently gained national attention for securing an acquittal for Karen Read in Massachusetts.

Earlier in the day, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman held a press conference alongside LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell to formally announce the capital murder charges. Hochman revealed the severity of the allegations, noting that the filing includes special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and the use of a deadly weapon.

“This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal, not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones, but for our entire city,” Hochman said during the briefing. He cautioned that while the charges are severe, the legal process must run its course. “Evidence is something we will be presenting in a court of law to meet the standard of proof we meet at every criminal case, which is beyond a reasonable doubt,” added Chief McDonnell.

The tragedy unfolded on Sunday (December 13, 2025) afternoon when officers responded to the Reiners’ Brentwood home, discovering the couple dead from apparent stab wounds. Investigators allege that Nick Reiner was responsible for the attacks and arrested him hours later near the University of Southern California.

A spokesperson for the family released a brief statement following the discovery, saying, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss.”
