Hulu has decided not to renew Mindy Kaling’s Gen Z comedy series Not Suitable For Workfor a second season.

The sitcom, created by Kaling, starred Ella Hunt (AJ), Avantika Vandanapu (Abby), Will Angus (Davis), Jack Martin (Josh), Nicholas Duvernay (Kel) and Jay Ellis (Bill) ā€œfive work-obsessed 20-somethings striving for professional successā€ in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood.

Season one aired in June and ran for nine episodes.

Varietyreports that Warner Bros. TV, which produces the series, plans to shop it to other companies.

Kaling’s representatives did not immediately respond to The Independent’s request for comment.

NSFW drew mixed reviews upon its release, earning an overall critics’ score of 54 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences responded better, giving it an overall score of 82 percent on the review aggregation site.

In her review for Variety, Alison Herman branded it a ā€œbland Friends copycat with hints of a sharper show.ā€

The cast have not shied away from comparisons to the classic sitcom, however, with Duvernay previously telling The Hollywood Reporter:ā€œIt’s always had a bit of a Friends vibe. That’s a giant to compare it to, but that’s initially how I felt being part of it. It has a more modern take on it. It’s work-obsessed kids trying to make their way in New York.ā€

Kaling broke out in Hollywood as Kelly Kapoor in NBC’s The Office, which she helped write, produce and direct during its eight-season run.

She went on to create, write, produce, and star in The Mindy Project, which premiered on Fox in 2012. The sitcom, about an ambitious New York OB/GYN navigating her career and romantic life, ran for three seasons on Fox before being rescued by Hulu, where it continued for another three seasons, ending in 2017

She has since established herself as a prolific producer and creator, developing shows including Champions, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Velma and Netflix’s Running Point, which has already been renewed for a third season.

Not Suitable for Work completed Kaling’s loosely autobiographical trilogy, which began with Never Have I Ever, following an Indian-American high school student in California, continued with The Sex Lives of College Girls, and concluded with NSFW, which follows post-college life in New York.
