After watching the first cut of the The Reunion: Laguna Beach, the reality series' star Lauren Conrad had plenty of notes.

The April 10 special brings together the original cast of the MTV reality series — including LC, Kristin Cavallari, Stephen Colletti, Lo Bosworth, and Talan Torriero — for the first time since the show ended in 2006 after three seasons.

And while Conrad was excited to reconnect with everyone again, she did have one “dealbreaker”: She had to be an executive producer.

“I spent so many years doing this without any control,” she explained to her fellow EP, Cavallari, on her podcast Let’s Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari (Colletti also receives EP credit). “To have the option to have control and say was really important to me, and it made it feel safer.”

Filming the two-hour special, a mix of group scenes and an onstage reunion, was “harder” than Conrad imagined. But when she sat down to watch the first cut, she felt even worse.

The sit-down with the entire cast was the first to be filmed, which already made Conrad “really nervous,” she told Cavallari.

In between takes, “I would just stare at the ground and try to get myself together, but they kept using those clips” in the first cut of The Reunion. “I was like, ‘Guys, this makes it look like I didn’t want to be with this group of people,’ which wasn’t true because I was so excited to be reunited. I was just, in that environment, personally having a really hard time.”

When Conrad watched the first cut, she noticed Cavallari’s face “doesn’t drop once” during the onstage segment.

“[But] every time you cut to me, I literally look like I want to light myself on fire,” she joked. “My husband watched it with me, and he was like, ‘Oh no.’ He was like, ‘It’s ok, it’s ok; they’ll fix it. You’re executive producer.’”

And fix it, they did. Conrad confessed to Cavallari she requested “so many looks” be taken out from the final cut. “I felt so bad for these poor people editing this.”

Cavallari didn’t have as many notes as Conrad, but her biggest critique to the other producers was: “Can you just do it in reality, like, what actually happened?”

As she explained to LC on her podcast, there’s one scene in which she’s getting coffee with Torriero and the edited version of their conversation didn’t give viewers the full context.

“You guys made my answer about dating so short,” complained Cavallari. “I was like, ‘can you just give it a little breath,' and they did… Just have what we actually said make the cut, it’s not that hard.”
