- The Jimmy Olsen/Gorilla Grodd DCU series has a title and full cast.
- James Gunn shared an in-universe press release announcing a documentary series about Grodd’s trial, which will be directed by Jimmy himself.
- Several *Superman* cast members will fill out the supporting cast.
James Gunn has officially confirmed the DCU‘s first mockumentary series.
HBO Max has ordered eight episodes of *The People v. Gorilla Grodd*, the *Guardians of the Galaxy *filmmaker and co-CEO of DC Studios confirmed on Friday.
The show will star Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, the ambitious young Daily Planet reporter introduced in Gunn’s *Superman* in 2025. Jimmy Tatro will play Gorilla Grodd, the hyper-intelligent ape from Gorilla City who typically antagonizes the Flash.
Gunn described the series as “our first foray into the true crime genre.” A press release clarified that the show will be a half-hour comedy series — and the fusion of those two genres makes sense, as showrunners Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault previously spearheaded *American Vandal*, the Netflix mockumentary series that starred Tatro as the primary suspect in a vulgar high school prank.
Gunn, who will executive produce alongside co-CEO Peter Safran, added, “Along with *Lanterns*, this was one of the shows Peter & I pitched to WBD before we came on board. With Tony and Dan at the helm, it’s something truly special.”

The show will also see supporting cast members reprise their Daily Planet staffer roles from *Superman*, including Beck Bennett (*Saturday Night Live*) as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover (*One Piece*) as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce (*Jack Ryan*) as Perry White.
Other cast members include Perrault, Mary Holland (*Happiest Season*), Eduardo Franco (*Stranger Things*), Arian Moayed (*Succession*), Andrew Leeds (*Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist*), and Tim Baltz (*The Righteous Gemstones*).

The official logline for the show reads: “A superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part ‘true’ crime docuseries, the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.”
Gunn and HBO Max also shared a “press release” from the Daily Planet announcing the production of Jimmy’s in-universe documentary series about Grodd’s case.
“The Daily Planet announced today it will begin production on an eight-part documentary series that will dive back into Metropolis’ most infamous murder trial,” the release says. “*The People v. Gorilla Grodd* will take a fresh, 360-degree look at the case, revealing a ‘lesser-seen side’ of the hyperintelligent ape, according to the film’s first-time director Jimmy Olsen. Olsen was granted unprecedented exclusive access to interview Grodd inside Stryker’s Island Penitentiary for the documentary.”

Perry White is listed as a supervising producer, while Steve Lombard and Cat Grant are credited as producers.
The “release” also shares some context about Grodd’s case. “Gorilla Grodd has long claimed his innocence in the murder and brain consumption of his father, King Grodd — a crime he was convicted of in March 2021 and has remained incarcerated for ever since,” it says. “The series will take an in-depth look at the investigation, featuring brand new reporting from members of the Daily Planet staff, as well as interviews with witnesses and experts on both Grodd’s and the Metropolis District Attorney’s side of the case, including Gorilla Grodd’s new counsel at the Metropolis Freedom Project.”

The “announcement” ends with a quote from Perry White. “Everyone thinks they know Grodd: the power-hungry gorilla who killed his father for the throne of Gorilla City…But once you start to look beneath the fur, you start to realize there’s a lot more to that primate.”
