James Blunt Has Responded To Those Rampant Hayden Panettiere Rumors

British singer James Blunt has responded to speculation that he was the “undressed” man on a boat that Hayden Panettiere was forced into bed with when she was 18 years old, after the story faced renewed scrutiny following her death last week.

Eamonn M. McCormack / Getty ImagesThe former child star died on August 16 at the age of 36, and after the sad news broke, people began to look back at how she was treated over the years — and it wasn’t long before this particularly troubling anecdote resurfaced.

Fotos International / Getty ImagesDuring an appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast earlier this year — which was recorded shortly before the release of her memoir, This is Me: A Reckoning — Hayden was asked about a specific extract from her book that the host had read in advance. Jay said: “You write about a moment in your career where a friend of yours takes you onto a boat. You're led to a room which has an older man in it, and then basically told to perform sexual acts.”

“When I read that, I'm like: ‘Oh, gosh,’ like, not only have you felt like you've had a really unsupported upbringing, you're now with a friend in the industry, and then ending up in a situation like this. Could you talk to me about what that moment does to your psyche?” he asked.

On Purpose / Viayoutube.com“I had been having a great time,” Hayden replied. “There was no hints of anything like that happening. So it took me… I was shocked. It took me by surprise. [I was] led by somebody that I had grown to trust and see as a protector, and somebody who had my back. And to be walked down the stairs, it was presented as though it was a surprise.”

On Purpose / Viayoutube.com“It was this very small room, and she physically put me in the bed next to this undressed man, who was very famous,” she went on. “He had his hands like this, like this was just an average day for him, and this is something that happens all the time. And I waited for her to leave, and that lion in me, that fire in me... My hair stood on end, and I became ferocious. I was like: ‘This is not happening.’”

On Purpose / Viayoutube.com“But I had nowhere to hide, and I bolted, and I hid wherever I could think of to hide on a boat,” Hayden continued. “There was no jumping off and swimming away, and I realized that there was nobody who was going to be empathetic to my situation, that this was nothing new to them.”

More information about the incident became public once Hayden’s memoir was released, which revealed that she’d been on a trip to the South of France, aboard a “super yacht” filled with celebrities and flowing champagne. She described the man involved as "a famous thirty-something British singer-songwriter" who was "lying in a bed."

From the waist down, he was covered by bedsheets, and I could see the outline of his body underneath,” Hayden wrote. She added that her friend, whom she called “Stella,” told her to “get in bed with him. He has a huge dick.” Hayden detailed leaving the unnamed star in the bed and running to her cabin, making arrangements to leave the yacht as soon as possible.

Nancy Ostertag / Getty ImagesIn a subsequent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hayden explained why she opted not to name the musician in question, sharing: “It was a bad look for them and [the other people I didn’t name] were generally people within my industry. They’re people I could run into again. I didn’t want to put myself in that position. Things happened a long time ago, but it was to protect me and my company from being sued by some very pissed-off famous people.”

Still, that didn’t stop online sleuths from attempting to unmask the man. Considering Hayden turned 18 in August 2007, that provided a year-long window as to when the incident could have taken place. People soon found photos of Hayden and British musician James Blunt — who shot to fame with the release of his song “You’re Beautiful” in 2005 — on a boat together, and then realized that James would have been in his early 30s in 2007 and 2008.

Lionel FLUSIN / Getty ImagesIn the week since Hayden’s death, this speculation reached fever pitch, with James being vilified and targeted on social media from people who had decided that he was definitely the culprit. And on Monday, the singer responded to the claims by tweeting a link to journalist Dean Piper’s Substack, which explains why it couldn’t possibly be him.

Jeremychanphotography / Getty ImagesDean begins by explaining that he wrote an article about Hayden and James being “flirty” at an amfAR charity event in Cannes in 2009, and how they were photographed smiling on a boat together the next day. He then detailed how these photos have led to him being bombarded with messages from internet detectives asking about Hayden’s story, to which he points out: “Guys, it only takes the smallest of AI searches to find out that in May 2009, when the pictures of Blunt and Panettiere were taken, she was 19, almost 20. So, if the incident happened when she was 18, Blunt’s not your guy to start with.”

Pascal Le Segretain/amfAR / Getty Images“And as she says she hadn’t met the man before the incident, and that she fled the boat immediately after, it takes nothing to work out that the cabin incident was the first and last time she met the man,” he goes on. “So, pictures of Blunt and Panettiere at the amfAR charity event (above) and together on the boat again the next day (below) mean only one thing – he’s really not your man.”

Surprisingly, Dean then goes on to address another part of the story that apparently doesn’t align with James, which is that Hayden’s friend “described the man as having a ‘huge dick.’” He notes that last year, Joan Collins wrote an article for The Spectator, that paints quite a different story of James. It inexplicably says of the singer: “He wore nothing but a pair of Speedos, concealing what one wag described as ‘a package worthy of a field mouse.’”
