Is Hulu going away? What’s really happening to the streaming service

Is the streaming service Hulu about to be canceled?

Hulu has more than 50 million paying subscribers nationwide, according to streaming service industry watcher Evoka, putting it ahead of rivals such as Apple TV+ and Paramount+.

But recent mergers, acquisitions and programming changes to the streaming landscape have clouded Hulu's future.

Here's what Hulu subscribers should know.

Is Hulu being canceled — or just folded into Disney+?

9to5Mac reports on an internal Disney streaming document — part of a project nicknamed “Project Gemini” — which lays out a multi‑step plan to move Hulu’s shows and features into Disney+ and retire the standalone Hulu app once that transition is done.

In that document, Disney says the Hulu tech stack and app will be decommissioned after all users have transitioned over to Disney+, and employees quoted in the story describe Hulu’s app as being effectively on life support, with no major new development happening there.

The leak indicates the unified Disney+ and Hulu experience is supposed to be finished by around the end of the year.

Disney's leadership last year signaled such a move was coming.

USA TODAY reported in August 2025 that Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors Hulu and Disney+ would integrate in 2026, with a unified app experience, but emphasized then that Hulu is not being discontinued as a service.

When is Hulu changing — and what does it mean for subscribers?

Disney confirmed Hulu subscribers can now switch their viewer profile over to Disney+.

When you link your Hulu and Disney+ profiles, your Hulu viewing history and recommendations get folded into the "For You" row on the Disney+ home screen. There’s also a dedicated Hulu hub inside Disney+ that you can reach by selecting the Hulu tab in the top navigation.

You can still sign up for Hulu — if you want

You can still sign up for Hulu on its own or as part of a Disney bundle, with ad‑supported, ad‑free, and Hulu + Live TV tiers, plus bundles that combine Hulu with Disney+, ESPN, and even HBO‑branded add‑ons.
