The couple announced the news of their split in a joint post on Instagram
The two went viral after Smith made a video breaking down how she assumed the role of Finlan's caregiver, following an alleged mugging incident in 2018 that left Finlan with a large list of health complications
Influencer Katherine Smith has split from her boyfriend of over 11 years, Benjamin Finlan.In a joint statement posted to the pair's Instagram accounts, the couple revealed that they would be going their separate ways."After 11.5 years of loving, enduring, surviving, and growing side by side, Ben and I made the mutual decision earlier this year to end our romantic relationship," the caption of the post, which featured videos and images of the couple, read.

"We know this may come as a shock to many. For us, it isn’t. It’s something we’ve quietly grieved for quite some time. There is no scandal. No fracture. Just two people who have shared more in a decade than many do in a lifetime, quietly acknowledging that love can change shape," the statement continued.However, the pair maintained in their statement that they would continue to be in each other's lives."How do you say goodbye to the strongest man you’ve ever known? How do you walk away from the girl you believe saved your life? You don’t," the two added.The couple also refused to call their split a failure or even an ending. "It’s a love story that evolved. One that began with a shy glance at The Keg Steakhouse and grew into deep respect, gratitude, and a kind of understanding most people only dream of."The couple signed the joint statement "With all the love, your new favourite bestie duo, Ben & Kath 🤍."In 2023, Smith posted a video to her TikTok breaking down a crucial moment in the couple's love story: when Finlan was allegedly attacked and mugged in London in 2018, resulting in various injuries and a severe TBI. The video now has over 20 million views and over 450,000 likes.

The incident left Finlan in a coma for 10 days before he was eventually moved out of the ICU. At the time, the couple was about four years into their relationship.Finlan and Smith flew back to Canada, where he entered rehab.Despite previously beginning to recover, Finlan developed a condition called syndrome of the trephined, which is a sort of neurological deterioration that occurs following a decompressive craniectomy. Over the course of the following four years, Finlan underwent about 65 surgeries and Smith assumed the role of a caregiver for her boyfriend."He's doing fantastic now, and he's at rehab now," Smith said in her 2023 video. "And, you know, at once upon a time, they didn't think he was going to survive. They didn't think he would eat, breathe, any of these things on his own. And here he is, a little miracle," she said.
In the comment section of the couple's post, followers left their support for the two."Love you both through this next chapter.
