Charlize Theron’s Mad Max: Fury Road costars helped care for her then-newborn daughter, Jackson, while filming

The Odyssey actress said her costar Nicholas Hoult and many of her fellow actresses on set stepped in to hold and comfort Jackson while Theron was filming scenes

“Those are some of my favorite memories,” Theron said

Charlize Theron is reflecting on her first months as a mother — which were spent on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road.

While speaking at the Academy Museum on Saturday, Aug. 22, The Odyssey star, 51, opened up about the village that helped care for her newborn daughter while she was filming the 2015 movie, per The Hollywood Reporter. Theron welcomed her eldest daughter Jackson through adoption in 2012, when Mad Max: Fury Road had just begun production.

Asked if she had a favorite moment from shooting the movie, Theron revealed it was seeing her costars look out for her daughter, as the actress hadn’t arranged for a caretaker for Jackson at the time.

“All of the girls in this film and Nick Hoult basically raised her for the six months that we were in Namibia,” Theron said. Hoult starred alongside her as Nux, and she was joined by fellow actresses Zoë Kravitz, Courtney Eaton, Riley Keough and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

“She was in the rig with us; she was with the driver and my assistant,” Theron continued, “but in between takes I was feeding her in the rig, and the girls would hold her, and then she would fall asleep, or she’d puke on Nick.”

Because her first moments with her daughter are so intertwined with the film, Theron said she especially cherishes her time shooting Mad Max: Fury Road.

“Those are some of my favorite memories because she learned to walk on that movie,” she said, “so yeah, there’s a deep connection to this film.”

Theron is a mom to daughters Jackson, now 14, and 12-year-old August, whom she welcomed through adoption in 2015.

The actress previously opened up to PEOPLE about her decision to adopt, which was fueled by her own upbringing in South Africa. She added that she’s always envisioned adoption having a role in building her family one day.

“Even when I was in relationships, I was always honest with my partners, that adoption was how my family would look one day,” Theron told PEOPLE in 2018. “This was definitely not a second option for me. It was always my first.”
